Starring: Kurt Russell, Wilford Brimley, T.K. Carter, David Clennon, Keith David & Richard Dysart
Directed by: John Carpenter

Synopsis:
Horror master John Carpenter delivers a masterful suspense. In the winter of 1982, a twelve-man research team at a remote Antarctic research station discovers an alien buried in the snow for over 100,000 years. Soon unfrozen, the form-changing alien wreaks havoc, creates terror…and becomes one of them.

Video:
Shout Factory presents The Thing from an encoded 1080p transfer with a 2.35:1 aspect ratio and it delivers brilliantly. In comparison to Universal’s 2008 release of the film, Shout’s transfer shows quite a bit of difference. For one, in certain areas of the film, notably outdoor scenes are coated with a shade of blue hues, which in turn complement the fine detail in settle grain the transfer presents. Second, images are brighter in comparison to its former predecessor, making the detail of the alien realistically eye-popping. Shout hardly disappoints with upgraded transfers, presenting us with a new 2k scan. I highly recommend this release, being a huge fan of the film and I praise Shout for handling this release with utmost care.

The Thing (2)

Audio:
Shout gives us fans a newly rendered DTS-HD Master Audio 4.1 mix from the original 70mm six track Dolby stereo soundtrack. If that wasn’t enough, they also included a 5.1 and 2.0 audio mix as well. Viewing both the 4.1 and 5.1 audio mixes, I couldn’t tell much difference as both were brilliantly rendered well with very crisp and balanced depth that will give any viewer a pleasurable experience. The haunting score by Ennio Morricone complements the audio track mix very well, especially listening to this on my Sony sound bar.  Brilliant! Overall I have no complaints with this rendering.
